July 13 - of floating islands and 6th century castles

Miyajima island is a beautiful island a few minutes away from Hiroshima. It is the home place of the floating Great tori - the entrance gate to the temple which looks like it's floating during high tide. The views of it were amazing at dawn , dusk and during the day. There were also numerous other shrines like the 5 story pagoda and beautiful temples with zen gardens surrounding it. One with various statues of kid like Buddhas. Beautiful rock gardens, steep stairways , beautiful arches and lush greenery a great backdrop for the temples.

Was a bit of a wash weather wise , so couldn't make it to the top of the ropeway. I dawdled instead around the back streets of the local market and stumbled upon the largest rice scoop on the world. Go figure.

Ferry ride back to Hiroshima and onward to himeji - the hometown of the famous oldest castle in Japan dating back to the 6th century. Beautiful carvings on the doors , intricate designs on the roofs, multiple storeys with protected windows and openings to fire weapons off of.
Also next to it were storehouses or waiting ladies houses which were like long corridors with small rooms all looking away from the castle and acting like a defense layer between the open and the castle.
Lovely views of the castle surrounded by a moat on all sides to keep enemies at bay.

Onward to Kyoto for another warm evening in the heart of Japan.
