July 12 - of war and peace

Yet another fine day in Japan but I was headed to a place with not so fine memories. Hiroshima - the latest fateful city that lost 140,000 people on the 6th of August, 1945 when the 'little guy' nuclear bomb was dropped on it , melting the entire city down until all that remained was a huge mushroom cloud over it , and caused black rain, which caused more severe damage to the survivors of the nuclear bomb that they would only find out much too late.

The memorial was beautifully done - it covered the dreadful event with sincere objectivity, showcased the hard truths of nuclear wars for all to see, built a cenotaph for all those who passed away in Hiroshima. And also built a shrine for children since many children passed away that fateful day who had gathered to help rebuild a school damaged during the war.

A particularly touching story was that of a girl who was diagnosed with cancer and was on a mission to build 1000 paper cranes as a way to appeal to the gods to cure her. She passed away before she was done. And while her school mates finished her project after her, to date, thousands of paper cranes are made and sent to Hiroshima in honor of all the children who passed away.

Here's to no more wars - nuclear or otherwise.

Ended the day with a pleasant boat ride and walk around Miyajima island and the great floating tori
